Q: What is the KTEC PIPELINE?

A: The KTEC PIPELINE is a robust and prepared pipeline of entrepreneurial talent, successful at building technology companies and rooted to the resources and benefits in the state of Kansas.

Q: What does the KTEC PIPELINE stand for?

A: The KTEC PIPELINE stands for Promoting Innovation, Providing Education & Leadership, Investing in New Entrepreneurs.

Q: Who runs the KTEC PIPELINE?

A: The KTEC PIPELINE is a KTEC administered program under the direction of KTEC PIPELINE President Joni Cobb and KTEC Entrepreneur in Residence Trish Costello.

Q: Is there a Board of Directors?

A: The KTEC PIPELINE is guided by an Advisory Board, a council of top technology entrepreneurs in Kansas, to assist in developing and promoting the program, determining criteria and mentoring participants.

Q: Who can apply for the KTEC PIPELINE?

A: Anyone can apply for the PIPELINE.  Ideal candidates will have a graduate degree or commensurate experience in science or business, technology-based education, professional experience or demonstrated proclivity, at least three years of business or scientific management experience, demonstrated leadership skills and experience, strong analytical skills and the ability to conceptualize problems through analogies, abilities to manage uncertainty and ambiguity and to take measured risks and strong interpersonal and business communication skills.

Q: How do I apply for the KTEC PIPELINE?

A: On-line applications will be available in mid-2008.

Q: What is the deadline for the KTEC PIPELINE selection process?

A: The application deadline will be in the spring/early summer of 2008. Applications will be reviewed and finalists will be selected during the summer of 2008.  Interviews will be held following the selection of finalists.

Q: How long is the KTEC PIPELINE program?

A: The program is one year. 

Q: What does it cost to apply for the KTEC PIPELINE?

A: There are NO costs associated with the application process.

Q: How many Innovators will be selected?

A: Ten Innovators were selected for the inaugural class with a single overriding purpose in mind – to find the great technology business leaders of the future that want to pursue their future successes from Kansas.

Q: Is there an age requirement to apply?

A: The program is not age prescribed but is designed to leverage excellent education, technology expertise and experience as participant prepares as a technology entrepreneur or enhances their rate of success.

Q: Do I have to be from Kansas or living in the state to apply?

A: You must have Kansas connections to apply for the KTEC PIPELINE program. You need to have grown up in Kansas, graduated from a Kansas university or are currently living in the state. If you are from Kansas or graduated from a Kansas university but are currently living out of state, you must be willing to relocate back to Kansas to be eligible for the program.

Q: Can I keep my job and still participate in the program?

A: Yes, this is a possibility. The KTEC PIPELINE staff will work with each Innovator on a case-by-case basis to determine the ideal situation for each participant.

Q: How are the Innovators selected?

A: The KTEC PIPELINE will be highly selective to ensure that the most capable aspiring technology entrepreneurs are afforded this unique and limited opportunity. Candidates will be assessed by a panel of advisors and selected based on a variety of educational, professional and interpersonal criteria.

Q: What are the major components of the one-year program?

A: Innovators will be required to attend two-day formal learning sessions each quarter. Innovators will receive cutting-edge education, skill-building and networking. Other components of the program include self-assessments, growth plan, field trips and bonding processes.

Q: Are the quarterly meetings required?

A: Yes. Innovators will be required to attend the meetings.  If an Innovator does not attend the quarterly meetings, he/she will forfeit his/her quarterly compensation

Q: Where will the quarterly meetings be held?

A: The quarterly meetings have rotating locations throughout the state of Kansas.  Each quarter the meeting will be at held at a different location.

Q: If I am selected as a KTEC PIPELINE Innovator, do I receive compensation?

A: Innovators will receive a $36,000 stipend for discretionary use while exploring opportunities for a startup technology venture.  Compensation will be paid quarterly - $9,000 per quarter.

Q: What other benefits do Innovators receive?

A: Innovators will receive best-in-class training in the fundamentals of technology entrepreneurship, access to accomplished mentors from technology businesses in or with strong ties to Kansas, access to venture capitalists with the capabilities of financing early stage technology companies and leverage use of resources to highest potential talent.

Q: If I am selected as a KTEC PIPELINE Innovator, what additional resources will I have available?

A: KTEC PIPELINE Innovators will receive additional guidance from mentors in the industry. At least one mentor will be matched with each participant. Mentors will be tech-orientated and have proven themselves in the industry and are fully able to coach, advise and direct a PIPELINE Innovator. The mentor's responsibility is to act as a coach and sounding board for the Innovator and not be the sole source of knowledge for all of the Innovator's issues.

Q: How are Innovators matched with their mentors?

A: Innovators will be matched with mentors through a process that ensures good "chemistry" to foster a learning environment.

Q: How are mentors selected?

A: Mentors will be recruited for the KTEC PIPELINE.  Mentors will be located in Kansas or a border community and must have a desire and willingness to pass on their knowledge and experience in the industry. Mentors should be comfortable with providing forthright and timely counsel and evaluation. Q: What is the overall goal of the KTEC PIPELINE?

A: The goal of the KTEC PIPELINE is foster more of this high quality economic growth in Kansas. When entrepreneurs with Kansas roots discover that they can accomplish their goals from Kansas, then Kansas communities will benefit from the economic outputs of their creative business pursuits.
